Oncology Social Worker Meetings

Networking, information and support for oncology social workers...

HopeWell is pleased to be recognized as an important gathering place for oncology social workers in the greater Baltimore area. Each quarter, social workers are invited to HopeWell to a share information and ideas, to discuss psychosocial issues and best practices, and to encourage each other in their commitment to provide services for cancer patients and their families.

We invite any social worker who currently works with oncology patients and their families to attend our quarterly meetings. Many times social workers are able to receive 1 Category II CEU for their participation.

Providing Support and Hope: Helping Cancer Patients and Families Facing Exceptionally Challenging Diagnoses
Presented and Facilitated by Patsy Astarita, LCSW-C, Upper Chesapeake Health, Cancer LifeNet

Every diagnosis of cancer  brings with it  huge  challenges  for every  patient and family.  However, there are some diagnoses that take the  patient, family and even the health care team into what seems like   unchartered territory, for example,  those with rare and sometimes  aggressive cancers, or those who are living far beyond their prognosis.   These cases have their own set of special and unique  issues and  concerns for both the patient and the social worker.  How do we adjust  our practice to help support these patients and families?  How can we  help them find positives and hope?

Patsy Astarita will present a context and perspective for this topic   and will facilitate a discussion to share our experiences, pool our  expertise and identify problem solving strategies.  Regardless of the  setting in which you work and/or whether you do brief work or longer  term work with oncology patients, this will be a valuable learning  experience.
